Cummings Plumbing Makes Acquisition
Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling acquires Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling
Kevin Cummings, Owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, announced that Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling has acquired Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling; effective immediately. The acquisition has been something that Kevin has wanted since October 2017.

“It made good business sense to acquire Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling,” said Kevin. “Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling has been growing substantially so we started looking at different business opportunities. We reviewed Baker Brothers’ book of business, their income to debt ratio, their employees’ credentials, and their liabilities. In the end, we decided that this would be a smart and strategic business move for us. Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling has been in the Tucson market since 2003 so they have a good saturation here. In addition, they are a top-rated company that focuses on repipes; something I want to concentrate on.”

With this acquisition, Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling gains a company that has 15 years of plumbing experience in the Tucson market, trained office staff and technicians, a fleet of plumbing trucks, and a 5-acre yard/facility in Rillito, AZ. During the transition period, Baker Brothers’ customers (both past and present) may, at their discretion, request Baker Brothers technicians instead of Cummings technicians. “We understand that customers build relationships with their technicians,” said Kevin. “We see that here at Cummings. It’s often that a customer will call us asking for a specific technician to go out to their home; one that they know and trust. We pride ourselves in creating these personal relationships with our customers and do not want to take that away from Baker Brothers’ customers. We are confident, however, that our new Baker Brothers’ family (both employees and customers) will acclimate to the changes as we work hard to both earn and keep their trust, respect, and loyalty.”

As of 5 pm MST today, Baker Brothers’ doors will be officially closed and Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling will take over. All phone calls, website inquiries, and social media will be redirected and handled appropriately. “We are excited about this move,” said Kevin. “The Cummings team is working hard to make everything a smooth and seamless transition for both Baker Brothers’ employees and customers. This new chapter is going to be very good for both us and our customers.”

New Flagpole

Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling puts up new Flagpole

If you’ve driven past Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling on I-10 lately, you may have noticed something peculiar – it seems our flagpole has more than doubled in size overnight.

Kevin, the owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, decided to upgrade the flagpole by increasing its size to a ginormous 80 feet tall.

“It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while,” said Kevin. “There was nothing wrong with the previous pole that we had in place; however, in light of recent events, we wanted to show our patriotism. Cummings Plumbing started in the US and has employed many employees over the six generations that we’ve been in business. We currently have a staff of over 57 employees; all hardworking Americans, making an honest living. Whenever I drive to our office and see the flag, I’m reminded of what this great country is about: the American dream. To each of us, that dream is different; there’s nothing wrong with that. But what’s amazing is that we all come and work together to make something great happen.”

“If people couldn’t find us before, they definitely won’t have a problem finding us now,” said Elaine Lee, Office Manager of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling. “Piggybacking on what Kevin said, we do have amazing employees that work for us. Each day, it’s Kevin’s goal to see all of their smiling faces. We work really hard to make sure that our employees are happy and that employee morale is high. We’ve learned that caring about our employees translates directly to our customers. The new flagpole is just another reminder that we live in a wonderful land of opportunity. That fence swings both ways. Not only are we able to help our employees provide for their families, we, in turn, have the opportunity to employ hard working people that are dedicated to getting the job done correctly for our customers and who are loyal to us. That means a lot.”

For more information about employment opportunities at Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, feel free to reach out to Elaine Lee at 520-333-2121. Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling is always looking for great talent to add to our ever expanding team.

We were among 233 exhibitors that were at the show. The vendors at this year’s show included products from cosmetic, cooking, house care, bedding, to services including plumbing, auto care, and more. With a variety of exhibitors to meet everyone’s needs, attendees left the Tucson Convention Center with full hands, booked appointments, and more knowledgeable than when they came.

We purchased four booth spaces and proudly featured our Perma-Liner trailer; showcasing how the system worked and how it could save a homeowner thousands of dollars, versus doing a traditional repipe. We also had a special sale on our Nest Thermostat system, which was $150 off the original $600 price – so for $450, a homeowner received the system and installation.

Arizona Bowl 2017

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl 2017

New Mexico State Aggies VS Utah State Aggies

December 29th, 2017
University of Arizona Stadium

Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling was proud to be a sponsor at Nova Home Loan’s Arizona Bowl on December 29th. The game was played between New Mexico State’s Aggies versus Utah State’s Aggies at the University of Arizona Stadium. Kick-off started at 3:30pm after the tailgating party ended and the evening lasted well into the night when the teams headed into overtime.

This was an amazing event; full of fans and spectators for both teams. Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling had section 123 in the Sands Club and we treated our guests to food from El Charro, drinks, and a night of fun.

A contest on KIMM FM and KHITS FM allowed 15 pairs of tickets to the game to be given away during the morning shows. Our winners received a $500 value package, which also included a Big Ed bobble head and a souvenir program from the event.

At the end of regular play, both teams were tied 20-20. Overtime commenced and Utah State took the ball first, not scoring. New Mexico ended up scoring the final touch down, winning the game for the Aggies.

An unprecedented attendance of over 39,000 attendees filled the stadium with roars, boos, cheers, and excitement during the game.

Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling has been serving Tucson since 1983 and we’re proud to participate in community events. We’re always looking for ways to give back and to show Tucson that despite our size, we are locally owned and operated.

Santa 2017

Whoa, Santa!

Are you planning on taking your kids to see Santa this holiday season? If so, have you considered taking them to see Tucson’s largest Santa? You should!

Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling is proud to be the owner of Tucson’s largest Santa (if you find a larger one somewhere, we’d love to hear from you).

Putting Santa together for the holiday season was no easy feat. Our crew had to get on a crane, remove his hat, and get him dressed. We even included photos so that you can see how Big Ed transitioned into Santa Claus.

We invite you and your family to visit Santa.

Conveniently located off of I-10, we will be open from 7am – 7pm starting December 11th – 22nd for anyone who wants to come and see/take pictures with Santa. Be sure to come inside for a sweet treat and hot cocoa.

Your child can also drop off their letter to Santa (we have a special North Pole mailbox inside) and Santa will personally write them back (letters are due prior to December 20th to ensure that Santa receives them in time and is able to respond).

Again, Santa is available for visits starting December 11th – 22nd from 7am – 7pm (Monday – Friday).

Plan your visit today. We hope to see you and your family soon.

It’s Called a Bidet

It’s Called a Bidet

Fun Fact: Fecal matter can travel through 10 layers of toilet paper!

Not too long ago, I remember listening to a TED Talk podcast about toilet paper. Oddly enough, it was rather interesting. The speaker likened using toilet paper after using the toilet to playing with dirt outside and then trying to clean your hands with a dried piece of paper. If the idiom, “cleanliness is next to godliness” is true, then that means that using toilet paper is one of the most unhygienic practices that we follow. Instead of cleaning the fecal matter, like we think it does, it simply moves it.

So what’s the best answer? Japanese toilets have all sorts of bells and whistles; with electronic touch screens and all…just to operate a toilet. But most homes don’t need something that complex. And because flushing wipes down the toilet is not a good idea (and keeping them in a trashcan next to the bathroom may be even worse), then the next best answer is likely to be a bidet (pronounced bid-day).

Bidets were invented by the French in the 17th century and it’s basically a low sink designed for the nether regions. The most traditional design consists of the bidet next to the toilet so that the user can easily transition from the toilet to the bidet to clean up. The vertical water jet (think water fountain) then shoots upwards to clean the region. It’s controls are similar to a traditional sink with hot and cold handles to adjust both temperature and pressure to the user’s liking. Some restrooms even contain soaps and towels for thorough cleaning. This is the perfect solution for cleaning up and ensuring that you’re practicing the best hygiene available (short of taking an entire shower after each bathroom use).

Bidets, nowadays, have evolved and no longer have to be a separate fixture in the bathroom. Modern technology now allows a bidet to be installed onto an existing toilet or you can get a toilet/bidet combo. This is perfect if you’re looking to save space and money. The way these combos work is that after you use the restroom, a little wand/spout comes down and then sprays water to clean the area. These units come with an electronic control pad that allows you to adjust the pressure, temperature, and location of the water jet. There are models that even allow for pulsing/massaging water streams. Some bidets even come with a fan/blower to “air dry” your nether regions so that towels and toilet paper aren’t needed at all.

Most systems are self-cleaning so that you don’t have to worry about cleanliness issues. Just regular routine cleaning and maintenance is needed to ensure that your bidet is running smoothly and efficiently. As the world turns to more renewable and reusable technologies to minimize our footprint on earth, this may become a standard in future household bathrooms.

In America, bidets are a foreign concept, even though they’re widely popular in a lot of European and Asian countries. With the toilet paper marketing raking in over 2.4 billion in sales in 2016, it’s no wonder people are hesitant to make the change to a paperless system. The average American is said to use about 50 lbs of toilet paper annually. Consider the cost of the toilet paper versus a little water to clean yourself and it’s a no brainer. In Tucson, a gallon of plumbed water costs about $.003 cents (so less than half a penny). Factor in that water will clean you better than dried paper and it makes sense to switch.

Unfortunately, when it comes to toilets, most people don’t purchase a new one unless the current one breaks down. If they do, they opt for the tankless or greener toilets that use less water. Which, if you think about it, doesn’t make as much sense as using more water but getting rid of toilet paper. When it comes to upgrading or remodeling bathrooms, a toilet is typically not where people will spend money. But it definitely should be.

I guess the only way to wrap this blog up is to reiterate the “fun fact” that started the blog. Fecal matter can travel through 10 layers of toilet paper. Eww.

If you’re interested in a bidet or having a toilet/bidet combo installed, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’d love to come take a look at your setup and make some recommendations.

Happy flushing!

Kitchen Remodeling

Planning a Kitchen Remodel?

From different types of cabinetry, appliances, to flooring, a kitchen remodel can become overwhelming very quickly. With proper planning, you can ensure that the kitchen of your dreams doesn’t turn into a kitchen nightmare. But what are some tips that you should consider when remodeling your kitchen? Here are a couple of things that I’ve seen in homes over the years that you may want to incorporate into your designs.

What a layout!

I have seen some REALLY beautiful kitchens…with some very bad layouts. This is common, especially if you are adding new features to your kitchen but don’t consider your space. Here are the most common types of kitchen layouts that you should consider:

  1. Pullman Kitchen: Everything is basically located on one wall. This is a great option for tight spaces, open floor plans, or when you have one long wall that you can utilize to the fullest. Some of these kitchens can include an island for additional space and storage.
  2. Galley Kitchen: A galley kitchen is where you have the kitchen on both sides of you. It’s design is similar to a walk-in closet – where you have different features of the kitchen (appliances/cabinets) on either side of you. This option works well if you have walls that divide the kitchen from living/dining space.
  3. Horseshoe Kitchen: A horseshoe kitchen is one where you walk into it (like a U-shape) with kitchen features on 3 sides of you. If you want an island, these layouts work best with larger floor plans. However, you can choose this design for smaller areas and omit the island.
  4. Peninsula Kitchen: Similar to the horseshoe, these kitchens sport a G-shape. They have an attached island that is connected to the rest of the kitchen work surfaces. It’s a great option if you have more limited space but still want an island.
  5. Corner Kitchen: This kitchen is basically in the corner. It can be an L-shape if you wish for one of the “legs” of the kitchen to be longer than the other. This option works great for open concept areas when you want to maximize space. The design also works well with smaller areas when you want an island.

Location, location, location.

Now that you’ve picked out the layout, where are you putting everything? One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make is keeping the plumbing and appliances in the same locations. This doesn’t always work well with the flow of a kitchen. There are some things that you should really consider when deciding locations:

  1. Major Purpose: What is the purpose of your kitchen? Do you do a lot of entertaining? Do you spend a lot of family time in the kitchen? Do you rarely use your kitchen? The answers to these questions are going to help you decide where to place your sink and dishwasher, your stove and microwave, and your fridge and pantry. For a home that does a lot of entertaining (with multiple cooks in the kitchen) the traditional “everything should be within 3 steps” rule does not work well. I’ve been to plenty of homes where people are practically stepping on each other to try to get to the sink, fridge, and stove. If this is your situation, try spacing things out so that there’s no congestion.
  2. Family/Activity Center: If you find that your family frequently huddles in the kitchen, you may want to consider having surface and storage areas that are designated for items used for other purposes. For example, if your kids love working on their homework in the kitchen/dining area, you may want to consider having storage for supplies. Maybe an area that acts as a mail center/activity board/calendar. Or maybe you may need to consider additional work surfaces for homework/crafts/eating. Whatever the reason, plan your space and maximize it accordingly so that you get the most bang for your buck.
  3. Entertainment Center: If you love to entertain, consider seating in your kitchen. This is important if people may be spectating but not cooking. Islands/bars work great for this purpose because they allow the guest(s) to be able to talk to the host(s) without obstruction.

Cool Features.

Have you considered adding features into your kitchen to help make it a lot more functional? Here are a few very cool ideas:

  1. Pot Filler: A pot filler can be great in a kitchen if you like to cook and hate carrying pots of water to the stove. This feature also works great in larger kitchens when your sink may be further from the stove.
  2. Secondary Sink: Having a secondary sink, typically on the island, is a great idea if you have multiple hands helping you in the kitchen. This allows multiple people to prep in the kitchen without stepping on one another (or having to mess with dirty dishes).
  3. Downdraft Ventilation VS Updraft: A lot of people have hoods in their homes that allow for ventilation but have you considered a downdraft system? Sometimes, downdraft systems can work better than updraft systems; especially if you’re considering having the stove/cooktop on a kitchen island and don’t want the hood of an updraft system obstructing your view. This is also a good option if your kitchen has very tall ceilings and an updraft system isn’t conducive.

Storage and More!

Proper storage in a kitchen is so important to ensure maximization of space. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Large Drawers instead of Cabinets: Cabinets work well for dishes but drawers tend to work better for pots and pans. Consider putting some large drawers in your kitchen for items that don’t stack well or that tend to get thrown/shoved into a cabinet.
  2. Built-ins: Built-in spice cabinets, racks, and custom cabinets created for cookie sheets/cutting boards are great ideas for the odd items that every kitchen has. I’ve also seen homes with built-in hooks, clips, and organizers for a plethora of different “miscellaneous” kitchen items that tend to end up shoved under the kitchen sink.
  3. Open Shelves: This is a great idea if you have special items that you’d like showcased in your kitchen. Consider having open space for flowers, pottery, dishes, etc. Having open shelving can also help your kitchen feel more airy and less confined.
  4. Glass/Frosted Glass Doors: Have you considered some peek-a-book cabinets where the contents are showcased? This is a beautiful idea for a few cabinets to add a unique look or to help tie together a design scheme. Adding all peek-a-book cabinets help make a dark wood color scheme look and feel less confined and more spacious. These cabinets are especially pretty with single color/monochromatic or rainbow dish patterns. Depending on the style of the kitchen, it may work with eclectic/bohemian styled dishes as well.

And an Island to Boot!

Not all kitchen islands are created equally. When considering a kitchen island, there are some really cool features to consider:

  1. Waterfall Countertops: A waterfall countertop basically means that the material used for the counter continues down the side(s) of the island. This creates a seamless and sharp look in modern design homes.
  2. Island Sinks: A lot of people put their kitchen sink on the kitchen island to open up the rest of the countertops to be used for other purposes/appliances. This is also a great idea if you love to entertain or have family because dishes can easily be sorted/washed/dried all on one large surface.
  3. Island Cooktops: Not as popular as island sinks, however, island cooktops have lots of perks. For people who love entertaining and there are multiple people helping, having pots/pans be accessible from all 4 sides tends to be a huge benefit. Just be careful if you have little ones so that they don’t burn themselves on the hot surfaces.
  4. Island Trash Chute: If you plan to use your island for prep, it may be a good idea to have a trash chute. There are a variety of different chutes to choose from to accommodate most needs.
  5. Portable Islands: Did you know that your kitchen island doesn’t have to be a non-moveable feature? That’s true. For a house I helped flip a few years back, I designed a kitchen island that was completely moveable. Imagine a large (4’x8′) counter height table. The table base was stained to match the cabinets and included a large self for storage. It then had the same countertop as the rest of the counters and had overhang edges for seating along the long sides. If needed, the island could literally be moved in order to open up the kitchen into a U-shape. The island could also be used as a table to allow for additional seating if needed. Designing the island this way created maximum flexibility in the kitchen and was very well received by everyone who saw the home.
  6. Pass-through Storage: Having an island that has cabinet doors on both sides that open into the same space means that items can be accessed on both sides. This allows for storage of large/bulky items and allows for people to help grab things without asking you to move. I’ve seen designs with and without partitions. Personally, I am partial to no partitions in these types of setups to allow for storage of random and awkward items (especially important if you are designing a gourmet kitchen and have commercial sized appliances/cookware).

Final Thoughts…

When it comes to considering where to place everything, I’ve seen people design it for the wrong purpose. I’ve seen kitchens designed for the 4-5 times a year when big family dinners happen; however, the kitchen doesn’t function for the family’s daily needs. It’s more important to make sure that the kitchen functions for your daily needs rather than the few times you need it for other purposes. When it comes to deciding, just think of the 80/20 rule. How will you be using it 80% of the time? Make the kitchen function for those purposes.

I hope that this gives you a couple of great tips and ideas to consider when you’re planning your kitchen remodel.
