Tucson, AZ.: If you’ve watched the news, browsed your social media account, or have talked to anyone in the public sector, you probably have heard of the tragic events that led to the death of State Trooper Tyler Edenhofer.

“This tragedy is an all too real and heartbreaking reminder of the harm our heroic law enforcement officers face each and everyday for the safety and wellbeing of Arizonans, and for peace in our communities.
This morning I ask Arizonans to join me in prayer and reflection; in gratitude for Trooper Edenhofer’s service to our state, for the strength and health of Trooper Dorris, for both of their grieving families, and for all of our brave law enforcement officers who are mourning the loss of one of their own. Arizona stands in support with you all.

Tucson, AZ.: Every year, the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson.com hold a contest where readers in the community can nominate and vote for their favorite businesses in a variety of different categories. Since the contest started in 2015, over 430,000 votes have been cast for Tucsonans favorite businesses. A Tribute to Those who Serve

The 4th of July is when our great nation comes together to celebrate our Nation’s independence and pay tribute to all those who fought for us and for our freedom. Today, we want to take a moment in our celebration to give thanks to all of the first responders that serve our nation.

Every day, thousands of first responders put their lives on the line in order to save others. These everyday heroes do their jobs without hesitation; willing to sacrifice themselves to help those in need. It is with the courage of conviction, sureness of self, and a willingness to do what it takes that enables these heroes to run into burning buildings, head towards the line of fire, and put their lives on the line for us. “These heroes have a passion and willingness for helping others,” says Kevin Cummings, Owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling. “These are values that are instilled in them from previous generations and values that they instill in generations to come.”

In 1910, Jim Cummings (great-great-great-grandfather to Kevin Cummings), served our nation as a firefighter in New York. During this time, firefighters would have to transport water to the fire sites. This transportation process meant minutes wasted transporting water; the difference between saving and losing someone’s home. Jim felt that there had to be a better way. Maybe there could be a solution implemented where they could simply pump water wherever needed. Born from that idea became plumbing, as we know it today.

Jim saw a need to help others. He saw a problem and knew that he needed to help come up with a viable solution. Since then, the Cummings name is associated with plumbing. There are many privately owned Cummings Plumbing companies all over the nation; one still exists in New York today. This is the legacy that Jim left behind…6 generations of plumbers, instilled with the values of helping others, coming up with innovative solutions, and doing whatever is needed to help serve their communities.

Importance of a Water Softner

The Hazards of Hard Water

Hard water is known to be both a nuisance and a major problem to most Arizona homeowners. It affects your skin when you’re bathing, your laundry when you’re doing wash, and your plumbing. It’s especially problematic to your plumbing, not only causing it to look awful, but it is a cause of major plumbing malfunctions.

So what exactly is hard water? Arizona’s water has a higher level of calcium and magnesium in it. This, over time, causes calcification. It’s easy to recognize calcification because you’ll be able to see the rock-like white and green build up on your faucets, spigots, and even in your shower heads.

Believe it or not, this calcification process is responsible for creating stalagmites and stalactites in caves. This same process is happening inside of your pipes on a daily basis.

As you can see from the image, after years of this happening, the opening for water flow becomes so narrow that even something as small as a single square of toilet paper can get caught and cause a major plumbing issue. Unfortunately, this image is not uncommon in Arizona homes.

We often find that calcification in pipes is the culprit for a lot of home plumbing issues. Not only do they cause your pipes to clog, they can puncture the actual pipe, causing sewage to leak into the ground around your home; which is a health hazard for you and your family.

Once this calcification reaches a certain point, the only thing that can be done to reverse it is to do a re-pipe of your home; which will end up costing you thousands of dollars.

Not only is hard water a hazard to your plumbing, it’s also bad for your home in general. Here’s how:

  • Hard water doesn’t taste very good. Most people who have hard water realize that the water tastes “dirty”. This is because of the extra minerals. To fix this problem, they end up buying bottled water from the store; an additional expense.
  • It causes clothing to feel rough or scratchy. By adding extra mineral deposits onto clothing, after laundering, the clothing is often left feeling rough and scratchy without the use of some form of fabric softener. Again, the purchase of fabric softener is an additional expense.
  • Hard water is harsh on the skin. Arizona is already known to be a dry climate because we live in the desert. But hard water just makes it worse; requiring more skin care products, like lotion, to keep our skin soft. More additional expenses.
  • Hard water can ruin your appliances. Do you have a coffee maker that you use? Ever notice how the appliances never seem to last? That’s because the calcium builds up in those pipes as well, causing malfunctions of expensive appliances. The list of expenses keeps climbing.
  • Dirty looking dishes. Have you ever washed glasses only to notice water spots and dirty looking plates after they’ve dried? Hard water is the culprit for causing it. To fix this, most people will buy a dishwashing aid rinse (like Jet Dry) or rewash the dishes. Either way, this adds to the ever-climbing expenses to fix the problems that hard water causes.

As you can see, hard water is responsible for a lot of things that happen in your home on a daily basis; all minor inconveniences that you’ve just grown accustomed to. But the biggest problem of all that hard water will cause is the need to re-pipe your home. This will be a major expense; costing you thousands of dollars, time, and inconvenience.

Now that you know what it is, how do you fix it? The solution is simple: a Water Softener.

A water softener replaces the calcium and magnesium in your water with sodium or potassium. The difference between calcium and magnesium ions and sodium or potassium ions is that the sodium and potassium ions do not cause scaling or calcification. The water softener filters and distributes water that is conditioned to provide your home with the best water.

By having a water softener installed, you basically mitigate all of the issues listed above.

Kenneth and Danny jetted all the waste lines in our house out to the street sewer. They flushed out an unbelievable amount of nasty sludge from under our island kitchen sink. Our house is only 12 years old and we bought it 9 months ago. The slow draining kitchen sink has been an issue since shortly after we moved in. After jetting the waste lines, they scoped the lines with a camera and proved to us the pipes were clear The Cummings Plumbing technicians were extremely professional, clean and thorough.

Earlier that day, we had a nationally-known competing plumbing company out, who told us they put a camera through the lines, and that we had a “belly” in a couple of our pipes–that the original lines probably had not been properly backfilled. (They never actually showed us the video.) They told us that correcting the problem would mean jackhammering up our ceramic tile floor and re-laying the pipes. It turned out, there was no bellying in the pipes at all. And, their estimate for jetting all the waste lines was more than twice what the Cummings estimate was! Turns out that the competing company is “commission based” on their sales, whereas Cummings techs are paid by the hour. I’m SO thankful that our realtor recommended calling Cummings for a second opinion!

Tucson, AZ.: On Thursday, May 3rd, Kevin Cummings, Owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, received a Certificate of Commendation for Exemplary Patriotism in the display of the Flag of the United States of America from The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

In March 2018, Kevin purchased a new flagpole to show his patriotism; a symbol of the American Dream. Since then, the United States flag has flown proudly at Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling; standing at 80′ tall and visible from quite a distance. “I’m going to repeat what I said last time,” said Kevin. “Whenever I drive to our office and see the flag, I’m reminded of what this great country is about: the American dream. It’s about us coming and working together to make something great happen. This nation is the land of freedom and opportunities.”

Elaine Lee, Office Manager of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, said, “We were really surprised when the representatives of The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution arrived and presented us with this certificate of commendation. We were not expecting it. It’s such an honor to be recognized for doing something that we are proud to do.”

About The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution: In 1876, there were many celebrations to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. As part of this patriotic fervor, a group of men in the San Francisco, California, area who were descendants of patriots involved in the American Revolution, formed an organization called the Sons of Revolutionary Sires. Their objective was to have a fraternal and civic society to salute those men and women who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the battle for independence from Great Britain. The Sons of Revolutionary Sires desired to keep alive their ancestors’ story of patriotism and courage in the belief that it is a universal one of man’s struggle against tyranny – a story which would inspire and sustain succeeding generations when they would have to defend and extend our freedoms. Out of the Sons of Revolutionary Sires grew the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, which was organized on April 30, 1889, the one-hundredth anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as our nation’s first president.

Cummings Plumbing Makes Acquisition
Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling acquires Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling
Kevin Cummings, Owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, announced that Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling has acquired Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling; effective immediately. The acquisition has been something that Kevin has wanted since October 2017.

“It made good business sense to acquire Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling,” said Kevin. “Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling has been growing substantially so we started looking at different business opportunities. We reviewed Baker Brothers’ book of business, their income to debt ratio, their employees’ credentials, and their liabilities. In the end, we decided that this would be a smart and strategic business move for us. Baker Brothers Plumbing Heating and Cooling has been in the Tucson market since 2003 so they have a good saturation here. In addition, they are a top-rated company that focuses on repipes; something I want to concentrate on.”

With this acquisition, Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling gains a company that has 15 years of plumbing experience in the Tucson market, trained office staff and technicians, a fleet of plumbing trucks, and a 5-acre yard/facility in Rillito, AZ. During the transition period, Baker Brothers’ customers (both past and present) may, at their discretion, request Baker Brothers technicians instead of Cummings technicians. “We understand that customers build relationships with their technicians,” said Kevin. “We see that here at Cummings. It’s often that a customer will call us asking for a specific technician to go out to their home; one that they know and trust. We pride ourselves in creating these personal relationships with our customers and do not want to take that away from Baker Brothers’ customers. We are confident, however, that our new Baker Brothers’ family (both employees and customers) will acclimate to the changes as we work hard to both earn and keep their trust, respect, and loyalty.”

As of 5 pm MST today, Baker Brothers’ doors will be officially closed and Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling will take over. All phone calls, website inquiries, and social media will be redirected and handled appropriately. “We are excited about this move,” said Kevin. “The Cummings team is working hard to make everything a smooth and seamless transition for both Baker Brothers’ employees and customers. This new chapter is going to be very good for both us and our customers.”

New Flagpole

Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling puts up new Flagpole

If you’ve driven past Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling on I-10 lately, you may have noticed something peculiar – it seems our flagpole has more than doubled in size overnight.

Kevin, the owner of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling, decided to upgrade the flagpole by increasing its size to a ginormous 80 feet tall.

“It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while,” said Kevin. “There was nothing wrong with the previous pole that we had in place; however, in light of recent events, we wanted to show our patriotism. Cummings Plumbing started in the US and has employed many employees over the six generations that we’ve been in business. We currently have a staff of over 57 employees; all hardworking Americans, making an honest living. Whenever I drive to our office and see the flag, I’m reminded of what this great country is about: the American dream. To each of us, that dream is different; there’s nothing wrong with that. But what’s amazing is that we all come and work together to make something great happen.”

“If people couldn’t find us before, they definitely won’t have a problem finding us now,” said Elaine Lee, Office Manager of Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling. “Piggybacking on what Kevin said, we do have amazing employees that work for us. Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling was proud to be a vendor at the Arizona State Home Show 2018, held by American Home Shows, Inc. this past weekend. From 10-6 on Friday and Saturday, and 10-4 on Sunday, attendees were treated to a variety of sights, smells, and tastes.

We were among 233 exhibitors that were at the show. The vendors at this year’s show included products from cosmetic, cooking, house care, bedding, to services including plumbing, auto care, and more. With a variety of exhibitors to meet everyone’s needs, attendees left the Tucson Convention Center with full hands, booked appointments, and more knowledgeable than when they came.

We purchased four booth spaces and proudly featured our Perma-Liner trailer; showcasing how the system worked and how it could save a homeowner thousands of dollars, versus doing a traditional repipe. We also had a special sale on our Nest Thermostat system, which was $150 off the original $600 price – so for $450, a homeowner received the system and installation.

We also raffled off memberships into our HVAC and Plumbing Clubs – maintenance clubs that Cummings Plumbing Heating and Cooling created in order to help our customers better maintain there systems to avoid costly repairs.
